On March 26, 2026 the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin issued it's Final Decision for the Village of Ridgeway Municipal Water Utility to change the method of collection for a portion of the Public Fire Protection to the utility bill effective March 27, 2026. We have put together this Q & A for our residents/customers. 

Q & A for Water and Sewer Customers Regarding Public Fire Protection Charge

Q1: What is the Public Fire Protection charge?
A1: This is a fee added to your Ridgeway Utility bill to help fund the maintenance of fire hydrants and water infrastructure needed for firefighting. It was previously collected through property taxes.

Q2: Why is this charge being moved to my utility bill?
A2: The charge is now directly included on your utility bill instead of property taxes. This change makes billing more consistent and ensures all properties contribute to fire protection services.

A4: Yes, the charge applies to all parcels including vacant and tax exempt ─ since fire protection services benefit the entire community.

A5: This will be an ongoing fee on your utility bill. It will be reviewed periodically, but the amount will remain consistent unless otherwise adjusted.

Q6: How can I pay this charge?
A6: The charge will be part of the Ridgeway Utility bill, and can be paid using the same payment methods as usual.

Q7: Can I opt out of this charge?
A7: No, this charge is mandatory for all parcels as it funds critical fire protection services.
